The Industrial Revolution and the European countries' need for raw materials, power and markets, led them to colonize Africa, especially since the beginning of the 19th century. After the agreement of the leading colonial governments at the Berlin conference (1884), everything changed quickly. In the late 1870s, only 10% of the continent was directly under European control. By 1900, Europeans controlled more than 90% of Africa. On the French side, French West Africa was a colony between 1890-1914 and French-Ecuadorian Africa, between 1899-1922.
The colonial activities of the French were centered in Senegal in the west-east direction of the interior parts of Africa. From time to time, as France moves in the direction of the Niger River, it suddenly arrives at the British colony. These two governments, which have sometimes been in conflict, have opposed each other through bilateral agreements.
During World War II, large numbers of Africans were drafted into Europe as soldiers and war workers.
The chart below shows:
1). Algeria lost 75,900 combat workers and 172,800 soldiers.
